Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery

Temas Eye Center is the only center in the Triad to specialize in Cataract Surgery. If you or someone you know in the Winston Salem area has concerns about cataracts or cataract surgery, or if you are unsure if surgery is the right answer for you, please give us a call! We will gladly provide you an honest second opinion. Modern cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and takes only a few minutes. At Temas Eye Center, we specialize in "Femto Laser Assisted Astigmatism-Correcting Cataract Surgery" (FLAACCS). Very few surgeons in the Triad have experience in FLAACCS. A few of the benefits of this advanced procedure are:

  • No injection - anesthetic drops are used instead of painful shots, eliminating the risk of eye damage, double vision after surgery, bleeding and blindness. Many surgeons still use anesthetic injections. Ask your surgeon if they use needle injections during their procedure.
  • No stitches - a tiny, self-sealing incision is made in the eye's surface requiring no stitches, which allows a more rapid return to normal activities.
  • No patch - you will not be "blind" for the day.
  • Short surgery time - our surgical techniques take only a few minutes.
  • Recovery - most people can return to normal activities within a day or two.
  • Better Vision - FLAACCS corrects the distortion and blur caused by Astigmatism.
  • Low Complication rate - 'Standard' cataract surgery has around an 85% complication rate; FLAACCS has a complication rate of less than 10%!

Temas Eye Center is pleased to offer both the LenSx Femto laser and the Catalys Femto laser procedures, which is a bladeless, computer-controlled laser that uses cool air bubbles to soften the cataract rather than the hot ultrasound used in the 'standard' technique. The LenSx and Catalys Femto lasers can treat Astigmatism by creating precise incisions in the cornea (Astigmatism is a condition in which the surface of the eye has a more oval shape rather than a round shape and causes distorted and blurred eyesight). Many cases of 'lazy eye' are due to Astigmatism.

Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery Winston-SalemAdvanced Technology Treatment with Catalys Precision Laser

Developed by Silicon Valley-based OptiMedica Corp., CATALYS is a new FDA market cleared medical device that features a state-of-the-art laser, advanced 3D imaging, and many other innovative features that can bring numerous benefits to Temas Eye Center cataract patients.

CATALYS creates a circular opening for accessing and removing the cataract. Clinical studies have shown that this opening is approximately 10 times more accurate when performed with CATALYS than what is achievable by hand. CATALYS then softens and breaks up the hard cataract into tiny pieces, allowing for gentler, easier cataract removal. Depending on the patient’s pre-operative vision and desired visual result, Dr. Temas may recommend a tailored treatment plan that could include creating ultra-precise laser incisions in the cornea and a specific clear lens type, such as a multi-focal lens. This tailored treatment may reduce a patient’s need for glasses or contacts after surgery.
