Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery

At Temas Eye Center, we specialize in cataract surgery. If you or someone you know in the Winston Salem area that has concerns about cataracts or cataract surgery, or if you are unsure if surgery is the right answer for you, please give us a call! We will gladly provide you an honest second opinion. Modern cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, and takes only a few minutes. At Temas Eye Center, the doctors use a procedure called "Clear Cornea" cataract surgery. A few of the benefits of this advanced procedure are:

  • No injection - anesthetic drops are used instead of painful shots, eliminating the risk of eye damage and bleeding.
  • No stitches - a tiny, self-sealing incision is made in the cornea--requiring no stitches--which allows rapid return to normal activities.
  • No patch - you will not be "blind" for the day.
  • Short surgery time - our surgery takes only 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Recovery - most people can return to normal activities within a day or two. The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons reports that 98% of cataract patients had improved vision after surgery.

Temas Eye Center is pleased to offer the communities of Winston Salem Alcon’s LenSx laser, a bladeless, computer-controlled laser that allows the surgeon to plan and perform your surgery to exacting, individualized specifications not attainable with other surgical methods. The LenSx laser can help treat a condition known as astigmatism by creating precise incisions in the cornea. Astigmatism is a condition in which the surface of the eye has a more oval shape rather than a round shape.

The LenSx® laser also helps soften cataracts for easier removal. During surgery, the clouded lenses are removed and, in most instances, replaced with an intraocular lens, referred to as IOLs. Today, we are able to offer patients, a variety of options for IOLs to accommodate individual needs.

Developed by Silicon Valley-based OptiMedica Corp., CATALYS is a new FDA market cleared medical device that features a state-of-the-art laser, advanced 3D imaging, and many other innovative features that can bring numerous benefits to Temas Eye Center cataract patients.

CATALYS creates a circular opening for accessing and removing the cataract. Clinical studies have shown that this opening is approximately 10 times more accurate when performed with CATALYS than what is achievable by hand. CATALYS then softens and breaks up the hard cataract into tiny pieces, allowing for gentler, easier cataract removal. Depending on the patient’s pre-operative vision and desired visual result, Dr. Temas may recommend a tailored treatment plan that could include creating ultra-precise laser incisions in the cornea and a specific clear lens type, such as a multi-focal lens. This tailored treatment may reduce a patient’s need for glasses or contacts after surgery.

I couldn't have asked for better treatment or outcome.  The staff at both your office and the surgical center are superior by every measure.  They are professional, knowledgeable and respectful of all patients.  It was almost a fun experience!  Although the cataracts in both eyes had impaired my vision, the thought of eye surgery was scary.  But - my fears were all for "naught" - it was such a quick, PAINLESS procedure, I wondered why I had waited so long!
